In praise of slow unfolding joy

This prompt’s dedicated to my homies in that teacha’ lean.

Why do we have to grade so much?

I tip my moleskin to the memories

of writing all that poetry

that came through on sabbatical...

Hi friends!

I’m so super committed to sharing writing prompts each season and the spring 2024 prompt has arrived! Even though spring is almost over, we still got some springtime weeks left. It seemed that April, the ideal month for writing prompts with National Poetry Month underway, came and went so quickly. Chile, I took the whole month off instead! April was rest as poetry month for ya’ girl. I got that good (what I hope to be final) fibroids procedure done, rested up, caught up with my government job teaching tasks and am finally coming up for air.

One thing that was super duper life rafty for my poet-educator soul was sharing how to leverage joy in the teacher place and space. So, my preoccupation this spring season is designing curricula that invite creative work and JOY into academic practice on every level. Check out my presentation on leveraging joy as equitable teaching practice here, if you’re also an educator, creative type wanting to keep joy alive while grading hella papers. There are so many moments of my joy leveraging that have helped me stay afloat this spring. All that to say, I want to invite you to write with me on the topic of

a slow unfolding joy...

so this is what my creative writing practice looks like as a full-time educator

for you, my fellow smooth traveling writer/ .../ .../

[whatever is on the other side of your muti multi-hyphenate self]

how does embracing a sense of slow unfolding joy land in your life?

what aspirations can you release in service to your present moment joy?

reflecting on the spring season so far, what joy points brought you to the shores of now?

[breathing space for you pause, reflect and write]

Signing off with an invitation to subscribe to this new blog! Here, I’ll share quarterly writing prompts, more about the joy curriculum project and my own writing. I'll also share writing workshop updates. For these workshops, I hope to curate some conversations and writing spaces for us to keep our creative practices alive in all the spaces across the hyphens we inhabit.
